How fitting is it that we honor our mothers during this most beautiful time of the year? After all, Mother Nature is striving to show off her best qualities, so honoring her is as easy as getting outside to enjoy Mother’s Day weekend for all it’s worth. Now, when it comes to our own mothers, what better time to honor the women who raised us, cared for us, and made us the men and women we are today than in May? The coming of spring brings with it a time of celebration through renewal, so although one day out of the year is hardly enough time to dedicate to our mothers, it’s a wonderful time to let them just kick back and relax.
Because sharing food is an expression of love it’s what we at SJ Hot Chefs believe is the most fitting way to treat mom on her special day. And while you cannot go wrong with taking her out to brunch at the many charming and reputable eateries up and down the South Jersey area, if you want to go the full nine yards this Mother’s Day (and why in the world wouldn’t you?) breakfast in bed is always a good place to start. Because food is enjoyed the most when it is prepared by the people you love, whether you’re the dad, son, or daughter, it means the most when you (yes YOU, personally) can make something for mom with your own two hands.
Maybe you don’t consider yourself to be a great cook. Maybe you dread Mother’s Day because you shudder to think about what’s going to be on the kitchen table without mom’s guiding hand. That’s ok. You don’t have to be a great cook, or even a good one. Even if you stockpile frozen dinners and leftovers when she leaves for the day, you are still capable of making her something special. There are literally hundreds, thousands(!) of recipes online that require minimal prep time and ingredients to pull off successfully.
You might think that cooking is this intensive and laborious process but we promise you that it really isn’t. Really what better way can you honor your mother than by trying something new and bringing it to her? It’s like when you brought home your first big art project, or the first A you got on a test – these are the things that your mom cherishes, even if to you it may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
You don’t have to make her poached eggs on crab cakes (but if you can, hey we’re sure mom wouldn’t mind) but if cooking interests you and you’d like to make something special for Mother’s Day morning there are ample resources at your disposal to help you out. Test the waters, check the internet, consult a cookbook, email your favorite restaurant in South Jersey and ask the chef what they’d recommend making. We at SJ Hot Chefs, guarantee you this, that if the intentions are good, and the execution is palatable, mom will be grateful for your effort just like she always is.
Good luck and seriously, no pressure.
