You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.”
― Pablo Neruda
Well it’s officially here, Spring that is. Which can only mean one thing, the earth has successfully rotated around our fantastic sun once again!
Spring is a lot like New Years. We make some resolutions, are able to hit the gym “if the Jersey weather gods permit” and we do a lot of cleaning.
At SJ, we’ve got some better ideas on how you can make your spring not suck this year.
It’s easy to spend copious amounts of time stressing about eating habits, work/life balance, and your lack of free time, so follow our easy breezy 4 step guide to not sucking this year.
1. BYOB picnics
It’s hard to find the time to get together with friends, let alone throw a picnic, but we think this is a truly fantastic idea. Get together with 4-6 friends, and instead of picking up your normal beer choices, everyone brings beer or wine from a part of the world they have never traveled to. Next, you plan a game. TedRadioHour recently had a podcast called “Press Play” which you can listen to [here] about the importance of playing as we age. It’s pretty incredible. Playing games for an hour a day connects with a different part of your brain and can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. But we really just want you to play ultimate frisbee and drink Russian beer!
2. Go on a one day adventure with 3 of your closest pals
How far have you traveled in a car recently? When’s the last time you stopped at every exit to try something new? Pick a Saturday or Sunday when everyone has off work, and hit the asphalt for one epic road trip. Pack a cooler with your favorite snacks, and pick a destination a few hours a way. Here’s the catch: NO CELL PHONES. Go to your local CVS and buy 4 disposable cameras. Enjoy being on the road, and when you make it to an unfamiliar stop eat at a local diner, because after all being local is the best right? Once you get back from your trip, go ahead and have everyone over to look at all the disposable pictures you took and make a photo album.
3. Dance free-for-all
Go Dancing. Right, like any of us have time for that. No but really go dancing. Get together with your friends, plan a night out and have a blast. Make sure you get lot’s of video footage, because you’re going to want to remember this one in the morning. Here’s the catch: Create characters for each of your friends that they have to act out the entire night. Wherever you go, they are in character. We’re pretty sure you will laugh harder than you have in years.
4. Make a soundtrack to your weekend
Sounds cliche, right? Let’s change things up a bit, ask 10 of your closest friends to pick one song to describe you. Once they have compiled this list which will no doubt be hilarious, it’s now your job to return the favor. When you all have a hand picked soundtrack, have a lip sync battle, just like Jimmy Fallon from the tonight show. We are pretty sure some friendships might be ended that night, or you might just end up on American Idol next season.
So there you have it. 4 easy ideas to make your spring not suck. We promise you one thing, you’ll have a lot more fun than just watching a movie this Spring.
Remember, it’s easy to get caught up in all the nonsense that are lives bring way too easily. These 4 steps sound insane and silly because they are. When we decide to live outside the box, breath a little, and enjoy life, even waiting in line for our favorite band seems memorable. At SJ, we cook for a living. It gets hard sometimes to appreciate the very thing we say we love.
So every once in awhile, even if you work on wall street, you need to jump in your car and go do something crazy. It reminds us that we are alive.
