September is a Month of National Months.
Well, now that summer is over, everything is returning to abnormal!
The kids are back at school, but there is still seashore sand showing up in the darndest places. The beach chairs are hung in the garage with care so we’ll know next June that they’ll be there. Vacation photos have been posted and “liked.”
For some, September is the best time at the shore because the crowds are gone and the water is still warm. But, for most of us, it’s back to the routine. Although, if you check, September is not a routine month.
First of all, September was initially the seventh month back in the day when there were only 10 of them. That would be on the original Roman calendar (September as in septem, which means seven in Latin, but you know that!). March was the first month of the year.
Later (in one of those three digit BC years) it was decided that the calendar would be immensely improved by adding two new months, but not to the back as one might suppose. The two new months were named January and February (by whom is unclear) and put in the very front of the line, which shoved all the other months back two places. And that, dear readers, is why the seventh month is now the ninth month.
September is indeed a popular month, especially to food and beverage aficionados. September is home to 12 “National Months” that we sjhotchefs.com have reason to celebrate. It is National Food Safety Education Month, which we both endorse and practice.
You may be interested to know that this is National California Wine Month and National Bourbon Heritage Month. Feel free to celebrate at one of our member restaurants (even if you BYOB).
September, in addition to being Better Breakfast Month, is also National (in alphabetical order) Chicken, Honey, Mushroom, Papaya, Potato, Rice, Whole Grains and Wild Rice Month.
Appropriately, you’ll find all those ingredients on sjhotchefs.com menus, so whatever your preference, we hope you’ll partake at one or more of our fine restaurants this month.
September is also National Yoga Month, but we can’t help you with that.
